FBR Honda City Cars Procurement Worth Rs6bn Sparks Debate

Updated :

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has planned to purchase 1,010 brand-new Honda City 1.2L CVT cars worth Rs6 billion, sparking public criticism amidst the country's economic challenges and rising taxes on citizens. The cars, which will be used for official duties including tax collection activities, will feature advanced specifications such as navigation systems and high-grade interior.

The purchase, which is part of the FBR's transformation plan, aims to improve the tax authority's ability to collect taxes and provide better services to the public. The vehicles will be delivered in phases, starting from January 2025, with 75 vehicles to be delivered in January, 200 in February, and 225 in March. The FBR will pay Rs3 billion upfront, while the balance will be paid in two tranches. The deal also includes free maintenance for up to 20,000 km or 12 months.

FBR officials have defended the purchase, citing the need to enhance operational efficiency and improve the mobility and flexibility of field officers in collecting taxes and providing services to taxpayers. However, the decision has sparked outrage on social media, with many questioning the expenditure and whether it is justifiable in current economic conditions. The purchase is seen as a significant investment in the FBR's operations, but critics argue that the funds could be better spent on other priorities.

As the delivery of the vehicles is set to begin this month and conclude by May 2025, the FBR will need to address the public's concerns and demonstrate the value of this significant investment in its operations. The purchase of these vehicles is intended to support the FBR's efforts to improve tax collection and provide better services to the public, but it remains to be seen whether this investment will yield the desired results.
