Lebanon President Joseph Aoun Elected Amidst Crisis

Updated :

After a two-year vacancy, Lebanon's parliament has elected Joseph Aoun, the former army commander, as the country's 14th president, bringing an end to a period of bitter division and filling a crucial gap in the country's leadership.

Aoun, who has extensive experience in counterterrorism and rose through the ranks of the Lebanese Armed Forces, secured 99 votes in the second round of voting, overcoming the initial shortfall in the first round. His military background and connections with regional and international actors, including the US, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, were key factors in gathering support for his presidency. The election of Aoun has been welcomed by Israel, signaling a potential shift in diplomatic relations.

Lebanon has been plagued by economic and political crises, including a sectarian political system that has led to corruption and mismanagement, leaving millions struggling. The 2020 port explosion, which killed over 220 people, further exacerbated the sense of failure among the country's rulers. Aoun's emphasis on national unity and rebuilding targeted areas suggests a shift towards a more inclusive approach, but his stance on Hezbollah's weapons arsenal remains unclear, potentially setting him at odds with the prominent political group.

As Aoun begins his term, he faces significant challenges in implementing reforms and improving the lives of millions of Lebanese. The international community, including the US and Israel, has expressed support for his election, and it remains to be seen whether he can leverage these connections to drive positive change in the country. Aoun's commitment to ensuring the Lebanese state's sole right to bear arms could be a crucial factor in determining the success of his presidency.

Joseph Aoun's election as Lebanon's president marks a new chapter in the country's politics, with the former army commander pledging to prioritize national unity and rebuilding efforts, although his stance on key issues, such as Hezbollah's military wing, remains to be seen.
