England's all-rounder Chris Woakes expressed frustration over umpiring decisions that went against his team on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test, despite his team's optimistic outlook on their chances in the match. Woakes felt that two close calls did not go in England's favour, which could have changed the course of the day's play.

Woakes took two wickets, including Nitish Reddy, but was left disappointed by the third umpire's decisions on two other occasions. He had Karun Nair caught behind in the 11th over, but the TV replay showed the ball only clipped the top of the off-stump, leading to the on-field umpire's original decision being upheld. Earlier, Woakes had Yashasvi Jaiswal on the front pad, but the replays showed the ball only brushing the top of the leg-stump.

Despite the setbacks, Woakes had an effective day, finishing with figures of 2-59 in 21 overs. He praised Shubman Gill's classy hundred, which helped India end the day on a better note. Woakes also justified England's decision to bowl first, citing the morning dew and grass on the pitch, and remained optimistic about England's chances, citing the pitch's potential and the team's ability to break the Indian partnership early on Day 2.

The Edgbaston Test is shaping up to be an exciting contest, with both teams having their moments on the first day. England will look to bounce back on Day 2, with Woakes and his teammates aiming to restrict India's batting lineup and give their own batsmen a chance to shine.
