Tragedy Strikes Indian Workers in Georgia: 11 Lives Lost to Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Updated :

A devastating incident has shaken the Indian community in Georgia after 11 Indians, mostly from Punjab, lost their lives due to carbon monoxide poisoning at a Gudauri restaurant on Sunday. The incident has left families in a state of despair, struggling to come to terms with the loss and seeking help from the government to repatriate the bodies for last rites.

The victims, comprising 9 men and 2 women, were aged between 20 to 30 years and were skilled workers who had moved to Georgia in search of better opportunities. It is reported that most of them took loans to fund their journey abroad, leaving their families in financial uncertainty. The Indian government has been approached for assistance in repatriating the bodies and providing support to the affected families. The affected families are now facing an uncertain future, having lost multiple family members in the past.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred in a commercial building above an Indian restaurant in the normally serene ski resort town of Gudauri. Preliminary investigations suggest that an oil-powered generator was left running in a sleeping area, causing carbon monoxide poisoning among the workers. Authorities have confirmed that there were no signs of foul play, but an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the tragedy. The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi has issued a statement condoling the families and is working closely with local authorities to facilitate the repatriation process.

As the families of the deceased wait anxiously for news on the repatriation of the bodies, the incident has highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers who seek better lives abroad. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of migrant workers, who often risk it all to support their families back home.
