Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rainfall in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam & Tiruvarur
Tamil Nadu is preparing for heavy rain in four of its delta districts - Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur - as a new low-pressure area forms over the southeast Bay of Bengal, threatening to bring very heavy showers and strong winds to the region.
Tamil Nadu government officials have cautioned fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and those who are already out at sea to return to the shore immediately, as heavy rain and strong winds are expected to impact the state on Tuesday and Wednesday. The four delta districts - Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur - are expected to receive heavy rainfall, with very heavy showers forecasted in Karaikal. Other districts, including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Puducherry, and Karaikal, may also experience isolated heavy rain. The Tamil Nadu government has already recorded an excess of 14% of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, with a total of 447 mm received compared to the average of 393 mm. The state capital Chennai recorded 845 mm of rainfall, 16% above the average, while Coimbatore saw a 47% increase in rainfall. The districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu are under an orange alert for heavy rainfall, and schools may be closed as a precaution. Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry have been issued a yellow alert for moderate rainfall, but official confirmation on school closures has not been made. A weather warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram, with Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry also forecasted for heavy rainfall. Some areas of Tamil Nadu are expected to witness light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning.
