Winter Holidays Declared for Schools in Pakistan's Northern Provinces

In an effort to prioritize student safety amidst harsh winter conditions, provincial governments in Pakistan's northern regions have announced extended winter holiday periods for schools and educational institutions. From December 22 to February 28, 2025, schools in conflict-affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's mountainous areas will be closed, while those in plain areas will shut down from December 22 to December 31. This decision aims to safeguard students from inhospitable weather conditions.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department made this announcement, citing the need to ensure student safety in the face of extreme weather conditions. This measure will affect thousands of students across the province who rely on schools for educational purposes. However, a similar decision has also been taken by the Sindh Education Department, that will impact educational institutions' opening from December 22 to December 31. The Punjab government has also rolled out winter holidays for its students and staff from December 20 to January 10, 2025. These provinces' decisions mirror a broader attempt to guarantee the well-being and safety of Pakistan's student population during the approaching winter months.

The extended holiday period has both excitement and stress for students. For many pupils, the winter break marks an opportunity to engage in various leisure activities, including visits to the northern regions to witness snowfall. Some would rather spend quality time with family, enjoy picnics, and relax in the fresh open air, while others are anticipating time to rest and maybe find time for fun events and online courses balance. Schools reopening on January 1, according to the Sindh announcement. Institutions that have not been closed before have started arranging entertainment programs to endeavor for a comfortable return.
