PIA Seeks to Restart US Flights after 8-Year Halt

Updated :

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is on the cusp of restarting its US flights, marking a significant milestone for the country's international air travel infrastructure. The airline, which suspended its US routes in 2017, is set to begin direct flights after an eight-year hiatus, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PIA and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The MOU addresses financial obligations, a key factor in the airlines' decision to suspend US operations. PIA's proactive approach to resolving these financial matters has demonstrated its commitment to meeting international aviation standards and regulatory requirements. This is a positive step towards restoring US flights and boosting PIA's revenue streams.

The resumption of US flights is contingent upon PIA meeting strict regulatory requirements, including the upgrade of its operational capabilities and replacement of antiquated aircraft with newer models. The airline's fleet faces operational challenges, with 17 aircraft grounded due to component and spare parts shortages. Despite this, the airline has made efforts to address these issues and is expected to continue investing in its infrastructure to improve its chances of being reclassified to 'Category One' status.

Pakistan's maritime diplomacy has also seen significant progress with the recent visit of the Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) MOAWIN to Comoros. The visit facilitated discussions on bilateral cooperation and a free medical camp, highlighting the potential of Pakistan's Exclusive Economic Zones and maritime trade.

The recovery of the Pakistani aviation industry is crucial for the country's economic development. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)'s agreement to visit Pakistan and assess the country's aviation systems is a welcomed move. The potential for Pakistan to be reclassified to 'Category One' status will not only increase the country's air connectivity with the US but also likely attract international investment.

The successful restart of US operations would mark a major milestone for PIA, enabling it to tap into one of the world's largest markets. With the UK Department for Transport expected to visit Pakistan in December and a Pakistani delegation set to visit the UK in January, PIA may also resume flights to the UK in the near future, making it a bright year for the industry and spurring growth for Pakistan's economy.
