Babygirl: Nicole Kidman Opens Up on Exploring Kinky Themes in New Thriller
Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has made a career out of taking on complex and bold roles, but her latest film Babygirl marks a particularly unique challenge as she explores the world of kink and power dynamics in a steamy thriller.
In conversation with her co-star Harris Dickinson and writer-director Halina Reijn after a screening in Los Angeles, Kidman spoke candidly about the 'enormous amount of trust' it took to take on the film, which sees her playing a powerful business executive who embarks on an affair with a younger intern.
Kidman praised Reijn's supportive environment, crediting the director with helping her feel comfortable exploring the more risqué aspects of the film. She recalled days when she felt 'terrified', but reassured that there was never a moment when she didn't feel secure under Reijn's guidance. 'You have your director at the helm going, "I will protect you. Nothing that's going to be in the film will be anything that you are not comfortable with. You are going to be okay"' Kidman said.
The film's director, Halina Reijn, has clearly struck a balance between challenging her stars and providing a supportive space, creating a milestone film that pushes the boundaries of on-screen intensity. "Babygirl" is set to release in theaters this holiday season, bringing with it an added layer of nuance to the exploration of power dynamics and their complicated intricacies.
