Heatwave Break Possibly Looms on Horizon for South Africa

Updated :

A 12-month-long heatwave, coupled with severe drought and food insecurity, has plagued South Africa, but a respite may be on the horizon as rain showers are expected to hit the region this weekend.

The subcontinent has faced unrelenting temperatures above the pre-industrial level of 1°C, resulting in distressing consequences for the environment, economy, and human well-being. The Vaal Dam, a vital water source, stands at a precarious 26% capacity, prompting measures to release water from Sterkfontein Dam when its level dips to 18%. Though the recent rainfall has had minimal impact on the dam's water level, the forecast offers a glimmer of hope.

Vox Weather meteorologist Michelle du Plessis has announced that the heatwave will abate this weekend, with rain expected to hit central and northeastern parts of the country, including the Free State, North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape. The remnants of tropical cyclone Chido are predicted to bring favorable rain to the region, lending credence to the prospects of an impending break from the prolonged heatwave."

South African Weather Service meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela sheds insight into the underlying factors contributing to the heatwave, citing the country's climate trends, particularly the influence of El Nino events. He notes that temperatures are ultimately expected to remain above-normal throughout the summer, with below-normal rainfall forecasted in southern coastal areas. However, the forecast also suggests above-normal rainfall in other regions, though it may be late in arriving.

This protracted heatwave has raised concerns about extreme weather conditions and record-breaking temperatures, with experts warning that similar occurrences are not expected to reoccur for another 50 years.
