Gulbadin Naib Fined and Penalized for Breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Updated :

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a dual punishment on former Delhi Capitals player Gulbadin Naib for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during a recent T20I match against Zimbabwe. Naib, an Afghanistan all-rounder, received a 15% fine on his match fee and has been awarded a demerit point for demonstrating dissent at an umpire's decision.

The incident in question occurred during the 11th over of Zimbabwe's innings, where Naib expressed his dissatisfaction with the umpire's decision. However, he crossed a line by performing a mock prayer, which was deemed a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. Despite the absence of the Decision Review System (DRS), Naib made a verbal request for a review on a legitimate LBW appeal that was turned down by the umpire. This display of dissent has now led to a fine and a demerit point for Naib. The sanction was proposed by ICC Match Referees Andy Pycroft, and Naib has accepted it. As a result of this breach, Naib will be hoping to avoid any further disciplinary action within the next 24 months. Given his recent actions, this added to his disciplinary record raises concerns about the Afghan all-rounder's on-field behavior, and it will be interesting to see how he performs in future matches. The ICC Code of Conduct aims to maintain high standards of sportsmanship and respect among players and officials. The actions of players like Naib, who participate in the game professionally, set an example for others. With his recent actions, Naib has cast a shadow of doubt on his commitment to maintaining these standards.

With several more matches on the horizon for Afghanistan, the spotlight is now on Naib to tone down his behavior and ensure that he adheres to the ICC Code of Conduct. The road ahead will be challenging for the Afghanistan all-rounder, as any further breaches of the code could result in more severe disciplinary action.
