Capuchin Monkeys Kidnap Howler Infants for Amusement
This unusual behavior among capuchin monkeys raises important questions about the evolution of social behavior and the potential consequences of boredom and lack of stimulation in non-human primates, highlighting the need for further research into the complexities of primate behavior and cognition.

Researchers in Panama have observed a disturbing trend among young male capuchin monkeys on Jicarón island, where they have been kidnapping and carrying around howler monkey infants, seemingly for their own entertainment, with no apparent motivation other than to alleviate boredom.
The kidnappings, which started in January 2022, were initiated by an immature male capuchin named "Joker," and later copied by other young male capuchins. The capuchins would carry the howler infants for up to nine days, without providing any care or nourishment, resulting in some cases where the infants were found dead in camera footage. This behavior is not only harmful to the howler monkey population but also raises questions about the capuchins' motivations and social dynamics.
The researchers believe that the capuchins are engaging in this behavior simply because they have nothing better to do, highlighting a possible parallel with human behavior. The fact that the capuchins are not feeding or caring for the infants suggests that they are not motivated by a desire to nurture or protect them, but rather by a desire for entertainment or stimulation. The kidnappings are likely having a significant impact on the already vulnerable howler monkey population, which has low reproductive rates.
The researchers are continuing to study the behavior using camera trap footage, hoping to gain a deeper understanding of how the capuchins are obtaining the infants and how the kidnappings are spreading throughout the group. By examining this unusual behavior, scientists may uncover new insights into the social and cognitive dynamics of capuchin monkeys and the potential implications for human behavior.
