Meta Experiences Global Outage, Affecting Thousands of Users
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, faced a global outage that left many users unable to access the apps on Wednesday. The outage was reported by DowningDetector, a website that tracks website and app performance.
The issue, which started at around 18:00 GMT on Wednesday, led to thousands of users experiencing problems, such as being unable to use the apps or refresh their feeds. Donna Orsunda of Meta acknowledged the issue, stating that the company was working to resolve it, and a separate statement from WhatsApp confirmed they were actively working on a solution with normal functionality expected to be restored shortly. This is not the first time Meta has experienced such an outage, with a nearly six-hour disruption having occurred in 2021.
The current outage is also significant, with over 22,000 people reporting issues with Facebook and over 18,000 experiencing problems with WhatsApp. Meta previously experienced a similar outage in March that lasted over two hours, affecting hundreds of thousands of users. In comparison to the previous incident, the current outage appears to be less severe in terms of affected users, however, the impact on users remains high, further highlighting the need for swift resolution by the company.
Meta has therefore begun to address the cause of the issue, even if the company, however, cannot state with certainty what caused the downtime and they are still trying to identify it.-services are expected to return to normal shortly, while users depend on Meta's prompt action to resolve the issue. As the situation continues to develop, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact the company's overall user experience and potentially its reputation.
