Updated :

A tragic incident has shaken Bengaluru, India, as 34-year-old tech professional Atul Subhash took his own life, leaving behind a distraught family and a community in dismay. Atul's haunting 24-page suicide note detailed years of alleged harassment and false accusations by his wife and her family, which ultimately led to a heart-wrenching cry for justice.

According to the accounts, Atul's wife, Nikita Singhania, had filed a dowry harassment complaint against him and his family in 2020. The situation took a turn for the worse when Nikita alleged that Atul and his family demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh in dowry, resorting to physical and mental abuse, including assaults. Atul, who claimed his entire salary was being transferred to his account against his will, had been subjected to emotional distress and psychological manipulation. The family's intent to extort money from him effectively crippled Atul's mental well-being. Tragically, Nikita's father had passed away in 2019 due to a heart stroke caused by the pressure of dowry demands, leaving his family devastated.

Atul did not take the allegations lightly, and in a desperate attempt to clear his name and seek justice, he penned a written account of the events. The 24-page note is a harrowing reflection of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his wife and her family. The chilling account has sparked widespread outrage against the family's alleged actions and highlighted the importance of tackling the egregious issue of dowry harassment.

A massive candlelight vigil was held in Bengaluru on December 9, 2024 in memory of the departed soul. At the vigil, hundreds gathered at the Eco Space to pay their respects, holding candles and mobile phones with flashlights, voicing chants of 'We want justice' to amplify their pain and anguish and demand accountability for the perpetrators. An FIR has been lodged against Nikita, her mother, and two unidentified accomplices for instigating the alleged abetment of suicide, which is under investigation. Additionally, an investigation team from Bengaluru has arrived in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh to gather evidence and scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The tragic incident has shaken the nation, and an investigation is underway to uncover the truth behind the allegations. As the country grapples with the aftermath, one thing is clear - justice demands that the perpetrators face consequences for their actions, and pain should be replaced with change for relevant policies to heal the suffering of countless survivors. The anguish of Atul Subhash and his family has ignited a movement towards ethical vindication, lobbying for unearthing and curbing reiterative ailments and pathetic instinctions arising due to flaws in existing laws.
