Sir David Attenborough, 98, reflects on his life and the state of the ocean in a new documentary film, "Ocean with David Attenborough", set to be released on May 8, coinciding with Earth Day, and explores the challenges facing the world's ocean, including destructive fishing techniques and mass coral reef bleaching.

Attenborough, who is nearing the end of his life, asserts the importance of saving the ocean, which he describes as "Earth's support system" and "our greatest asset against climate change". He believes that rehabilitating the ocean will save the planet and that it is more important than land. The documentary film will be released as a Global Cinema Event and will also be available on National Geographic, Disney Plus, and Hulu later this year.

The new documentary highlights the devastating impact of industrial fishing on the world's oceans, with Attenborough calling it "modern day colonialism at sea" that's "draining the life from our oceans". He claims that industrial fishing has killed two-thirds of all large predator fish and is removing the foundation of entire ecosystems in Antarctica. Attenborough also condemns the destruction caused by bottom trawling, which tears the seabed with such force that the trails of destruction can be seen from space.

The film, in partnership with the UN's upcoming Ocean Conference, aims to highlight the need for ocean protection and push for a plan to protect 30% of the world's oceans from destructive fishing by 2030. Attenborough's career spans eight decades, and he has been a prominent figure in British television, having first presented a TV program in 1953 and later becoming the chief controller of BBC2.

As the world prepares to celebrate Earth Day, Sir David Attenborough's new documentary serves as a timely reminder of the importance of protecting our oceans and the need for immediate action to address the challenges facing our planet. With his characteristic passion and conviction, Attenborough makes a compelling case for saving the ocean, which he believes is crucial for saving the world.
