Petrol Price in Pakistan Remains Unchanged

The unchanged petrol price in Pakistan is a result of the government's efforts to stabilize the economy, despite fluctuations in international markets, and the decision is expected to have far-reaching consequences for the country's economy and environment.

The government of Pakistan has decided to keep the domestic oil prices unchanged from May 1, 2025, despite minor fluctuations in international markets, with a negligible drop in Premium Motor Gasoline and a slight increase in High-Speed Diesel prices.

The prices of Kerosene and LDO are expected to increase by Rs1.30/litre and Rs1.35/litre, respectively. The federal government has reduced the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs2 per liter for the next fortnight, with the new prices being Rs252.63 for petrol and Rs256.64 for high-speed diesel. This decision comes after the government increased the petroleum levy to Rs80 per liter, allowing them to keep prices unchanged despite global market fluctuations.

The price reduction is expected to trigger increased demand, encourage carbon emissions, and cost higher foreign exchange. The government had previously increased the levy to Rs70 per liter, and the additional Rs10 per liter will be used to fund road construction in Sindh and Balochistan. The finance ministry has announced a reduction in petrol and diesel prices, effective from May 1, with petrol price decreased by Rs2 per litre and high-speed diesel price decreased by Rs2 per litre.

The decision to keep oil prices unchanged is expected to have a significant impact on the economy and the environment, and it remains to be seen how the government will balance the need to keep prices low with the need to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable development.
