PM Assures Support for PCB to Host Champions Trophy

Updated :

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of "complete support" to host the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, amid ongoing negotiations with India over a "hybrid model" for the tournament.

In a meeting with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore, PM Sharif emphasized that the hosting of the Champions Trophy is not just a matter of financial gain, but also about maintaining the country's self-respect and pride. Naqvi briefed the prime minister on the progress made so far, including the agreement with the ICC on the hybrid model. Under this model, India will play its matches in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament takes place in Pakistan.

The development comes at a time when the PCB is facing a significant challenge in hosting the tournament, with India refusing to play its matches in Pakistan due to the Indian government's policy prohibiting the team from traveling to Pakistan. However, the ICC has agreed to the hybrid model, allowing India to play its matches in Dubai while considering a similar arrangement for multi-lateral events till 2027.

PCB has sought a written assurance from the ICC regarding the hybrid model, citing concerns over the Indian government's policy. The Emirates Cricket Board has confirmed that they will host India's matches, and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025.

The decision to host the Champions Trophy in Dubai, while India plays its matches there, marks a significant concession on the part of Pakistan, and it remains to be seen how this move will impact future bilateral cricketing ties between the two countries.
