Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from ODI cricket, citing a desire to focus on T20 cricket and prolong his overall career, drawing inspiration from Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni's longevity in the sport.

Stoinis, 35, plans to continue playing for Australia in T20 internationals and in franchise leagues worldwide, aiming to follow the blueprint set by du Plessis and Dhoni, who have maintained high performance levels into their 40s. He believes that by focusing on T20 cricket, he can ensure his physical health and extend his career, with the format being his "bread and butter" where his skills are best utilized.

Stoinis also expressed his views on the Impact Player rule in the IPL, stating that it diminishes the usefulness of an all-rounder and makes it harder for them to get into the team. He believes that Indian cricket should prioritize developing all-rounders, rather than relying on the Impact Player rule. Stoinis will return to Punjab Kings after a nearly decade-long hiatus and will face Gujarat Titans in the season opener on Tuesday.

With his focus on T20 cricket, Stoinis is set to join the likes of Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni in the pursuit of career longevity, and his experience and skills will be valuable assets to the Punjab Kings in the upcoming IPL season.
