Murree Braces for its First Winter Snowfall, Authorities Take Precautions

Updated :

Murree, a popular hill station in Pakistan, is preparing for its first snowfall of the season as the Pakistan Meteorological Department issues a snow security alert. The forecast has the local authorities scrambling to put in place a comprehensive snowfall security plan, aimed at ensuring the safety of tourists and residents alike.

The Murree district administration has activated 19 facility and information centers, with Civil Defence volunteers manning key routes. An additional 60 volunteers are set to join the efforts by December 15. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has also provided crucial equipment, including search and rescue jackets, rain and snow protection tents, and tyre snow chains, to aid in the preparations. Furthermore, the Pakistan Air Force has been deployed to offer assistance during the snowfall. The setting up of monitoring points at GT Road Toll Plaza and Motorway Toll Plaza is part of the administration's measures to prevent snow damage and ensure tourist safety.

In response to the situation, the Pakistan High Court has directed the district administration to take necessary measures to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of tourists. The Murree snow season is expected to last until March 15, drawing a large number of visitors seeking to experience the scenic views and excitement of snowfall. The forecast has already led to a surge in tourism, with the scenic hill station becoming a hotspot for weekend getaways. Tourists are flocking to Murree for a taste of winter's beauty, exploring shopping, savoring hot beverages, and strolling along the famous Mall Road alike.

Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has taken a keen interest in the matter, chairing a review meeting to assess the preparedness of the district administration. The PDMA has also dispatched two trucks of relief supplies to Murree, which include essential items like blankets, shovels, shoes, warm hats, rain covers, and emergency search-and-rescue gear to support the administration in maintaining resident and visitor safety.

As the winter season begins to wrap up in other parts of the country, Pakistan's hill stations like Murree are coming alive with the promise of snow, offering a thrilling getaway for tourists. With the authorities taking swift action to ensure safety, tourists can look forward to an unforgettable experience as they embark on a journey to Murree's breathtaking wintry landscapes.
