Zia Chishti Wins Defamation Case Against The Telegraph
The Telegraph's apology and agreement to pay damages and legal costs mark a significant development in the case, highlighting the importance of verifying allegations before publication. Chishti's case has sparked a wider conversation about the need to balance the rights of accusers and the accused, and the importance of protecting individuals from false and defamatory allegations.

Pakistani-American businessman Zia Chishti has emerged victorious in a defamation case against The Telegraph, with the UK newspaper issuing a formal apology and agreeing to pay damages and cover Chishti's legal costs. The case centered on allegations of sexual harassment made by Chishti's former employee, Tatiana Spottiswood, which The Telegraph had reported, but later admitted were false, misleading, and defamatory.
Chishti, a recipient of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, had filed a lawsuit against The Telegraph's publisher, Telegraph Media Group, at the UK High Court, challenging 13 articles published between 2021 and 2023 that republished claims made by Spottiswood. Chishti maintained his innocence and provided evidence to refute the claims, and The Telegraph's apology states that the allegations were false, misleading, and defamatory.
The apology will be published on top of 13 separate articles and will remain available on the newspaper's website without a paywall. Chishti's lawyers have hailed the apology as a significant victory for Chishti and a step in the right direction for society, which has often prioritized the rights of the accuser over the accused. Chishti has also sued Spottiswoode and her attorneys in the US for defamation, and the case is ongoing.
Chishti welcomed the settlement and apology, stating that his family and he had endured three and a half years of hardship due to the allegations. He has expressed hope that the newly elected US Congress will grant him the opportunity to clear his name. The victory is a significant milestone for Chishti, who was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2018 for his contributions to business and technology.
