Narendra Modi Boosts Makhana Globally
With makhana set to become a global snack, the cultural bonds between India and Mauritius are expected to grow stronger, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other's heritage and traditions, as the two nations continue to nurture their historical ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced plans to take makhana, a traditional snack from Bihar, to the global stage, making it a part of snack menus worldwide, during his visit to Mauritius to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
Modi's visit to Mauritius aimed to fortify the cultural and historical bonds between India and Mauritius, highlighting the significant connection between the Maha Kumbh Mela and the people of Mauritius. Many families from Mauritius participated in the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, and Modi brought holy Sangam water from the event to be merged with Ganga Talab, symbolizing the strong ties between the two nations.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the inspiration drawn by Mauritian freedom fighters from Indian figures like Lord Ram and Ramcharitmanas during their time in India. He recalled his personal connection with Mauritius, dating back to his 1998 visit for the International Ramayan Conference, which saw enthusiastic participation from the Mauritian diaspora. Modi handed over OCI cards to the Prime Minister of Mauritius and his spouse, further solidifying the bond between the two countries.
Modi announced India's support for initiatives to nurture the Girmitiya legacy, acknowledging the shared heritage and familial connections between India and Mauritius. This move is expected to strengthen the cultural and economic ties between the two nations, with makhana being a key aspect of this initiative.
As India and Mauritius continue to strengthen their bilateral ties, the promotion of makhana globally is poised to become a significant aspect of their cultural exchange, symbolizing the deep-rooted connections between the two countries.
