South Africa on Brink of Test Victory over Sri Lanka

Updated :

With a five-wicket lead, South Africa is poised to secure a triumph in the first Test against Sri Lanka, as the tourists struggle to recover from a poor batting display. Sri Lanka trails by 413 runs with five wickets in hand, having fared poorly in both innings.

South Africa's strong display in their second innings saw them declare on 366-5, thanks to a remarkable 249-run partnership between Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs. Bavuma scored 113, his third Test century, while Stubbs reached a maiden century, despite initially receiving a lifeline when Angelo Mathews dropped a catch and he was initially given out leg before wicket, which was later overturned on review. Initially, Sri Lanka had a difficult time tackling the South African duo, with their stand taking over six hours to be broken.

Sri Lanka's upper-middle order showed some resilience, with Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva combining for a 95-run stand on the fourth morning, stabilizing the innings with a 43.5-over partnership. However, their resistance was eventually broken when Dhananjaya was caught by Tony de Zorzi for 44. In a display of grit, Silva reached his 18th Test fifty in knitting together a last stand against the hosts, browsing very appealing economical bowling conditions at the fold with honored tailenders to keep their side alive.

South Africa now looks set to claim victory in the first Test, having constrained Sri Lanka's batting efforts throughout the match. The tourists, though holding 5 wickets in hand, are left with a daunting task to stay in the match, with a 413-run deficit and their shaky batting form weighing heavily on their chances for a comeback.
