Sunil Gavaskar: Peace at Borders Key to India-Pakistan Cricket

The possibility of India and Pakistan resuming bilateral cricket ties hinges on the establishment of peace along their shared border, with cricket remaining a secondary concern until these issues are resolved, and the Asia Cup 2025 potentially providing an opportunity for the two teams to face each other again.

Updated :

Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has emphasized that the resumption of cricket bilateral ties between India and Pakistan is contingent upon peace at the borders, suggesting that the Indian government may be open to talks if there are no incidents at the border, which has been a major factor in the suspension of bilateral cricket since the last series in 2012-13.

Gavaskar's statement comes amid reports that the two teams may play an additional three matches in the Asia Cup 2025, with the tournament likely to be held in September, although the venue is yet to be confirmed, with Sri Lanka and the UAE being considered as options. The India-Pakistan clash in the Champions Trophy 2025 was a dominant affair, with India winning by six wickets, highlighting the intense rivalry between the two teams.

Former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has also advocated for the resumption of a bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan, citing the strong friendship between players and support from fans, who love Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. Sarfaraz also defended Babar Azam, saying he should be allowed to bat for the full 50 overs, taking inspiration from Virat Kohli's approach.

The resumption of cricket bilateral ties between India and Pakistan remains a complex issue, with political differences and border tensions playing a significant role. However, with efforts from cricketing legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Sarfaraz Ahmed, there is hope that the two teams can once again engage in a bilateral series, bringing joy to fans on both sides of the border.
