The US Senate has confirmed Kash Patel as the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with a narrow 51-49 vote, despite concerns over his history of politicization and lack of experience.
Patel, a loyalist of US President Donald Trump, has been accused of spreading conspiracy theories, including the claim that the FBI planned the January 6, 2021 US Capitol attack as a "false flag" operation. He has also stated that he would use the FBI to target Trump's political rivals and journalists, allegations he has denied. Patel's past statements and actions have raised concerns about his ability to lead the FBI fairly.
Despite these concerns, Patel's confirmation was approved by the Senate, with only two Republicans, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, joining 47 Democrats in opposing the nomination.
