Steve Smith and Alex Carey's unbeaten partnership of 229 runs has put Australia in a commanding position in the second Test against Sri Lanka, with the duo taking control of proceedings on the third day in Galle. Smith scored his 36th Test century, while Carey played a crucial role in the partnership, inspiring Smith to play aggressively and take on the Sri Lankan spinners.

The Australian batsmen dominated the Sri Lankan bowling attack, making the dry and dusty pitch look docile. Smith's masterclass performance included playing reverse sweeps on five occasions, thanks in part to Carey's unorthodox approach, which also caused problems for the Sri Lankan spinners. The partnership was a testament to the close relationship between Smith and Carey, who reportedly meet every morning to discuss their strategy.

Sri Lanka's bowlers struggled to take wickets, allowing Australia to post a dominant first-innings total. Kusal Mendis top-scored for Sri Lanka, making 85 not out, but his team was bowled out for 257. Australia have already taken a 1-0 lead in the series, having won the first Test by an innings and 242 runs, their worst defeat in Test history.

The partnership between Smith and Carey has put Australia in a strong position to take a 2-0 lead in the series. With the Sri Lankan bowlers struggling to take wickets, Australia will look to continue their dominance and secure a victory in the second Test.
