Ratan Tata's surprise will: Rs 500 crore to Mohini Mohan Dutta

The surprise bequest has raised questions about the relationship between Ratan Tata and Mohini Mohan Dutta, with some speculating about the reasons behind this decision. As the probate process unfolds, more details are expected to emerge about the will and its implications for the Tata family and estate.

A significant portion of Ratan Tata's wealth, estimated to be over Rs 500 crore, has been bequeathed to Mohini Mohan Dutta, a lesser-known associate from Jamshedpur, leaving the Tata family and estate experts stunned. This unexpected decision has sparked interest and raised questions about the distribution of Ratan Tata's estate, with the rest of his wealth dedicated to charitable causes.

Dutta, an entrepreneur who used to own the travel agency Stallion, had a long-standing association with RNT and had worked at Tata companies for nine years. The will's executors face the challenge of navigating the complex situation amidst family dynamics and stakeholder concerns, with Dutta seeking a larger share of Tata's inheritance than what is specified in his will. The will designates two-thirds of the residual estate, valued at over Rs 350 crore, to Tata's half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy.

The distribution of RNT's wealth can only be done after the will is submitted for probate and certified by the High Court, which is expected to take up to six months. Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, died on October 9, 2024, and left behind assets worth Rs 500 crore for Mohini Mohan Dutta, including a beach bungalow in Alibaug, a two-storey house in Juhu, fixed deposits over Rs 350 crore, and a stake in Tata Sons.

As the estate's distribution is expected to be closely scrutinized by legal experts, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, with Dutta's claim of his share being valued at around Rs 650 crore exceeding the valuation of his inheritance. The outcome of this complex situation will be closely watched, given the significant amount of wealth involved and the interests of various stakeholders.
