Joo Wins R&A Student Tour Series Spain, Leu Takes Men's joos Title
Joo and Leu's victories at La Sella Golf Club showcased their skills on challenging greens, with Abom and other contenders looking to make a strong finish in the tournament, and the series will continue to shape the field for the 2024/25 Final at St Andrews, with Monk and Leu setting the tone in their respective divisions.
Thomas Abom has a chance to win his second R&A Student Tour Series title after a battling 74 on day two at La Sella Golf Club, where Judy Joo and William Leu claimed their second series victories, with Joo winning the women's event by three-over-par 219 and Leu mastering the 18th hole to take the men's title.
Abom, the 20-year-old Irish Close champion, recovered from a three-over start to finish strongly and keep his chances alive in the tournament, and will be looking to replicate his form from last year's win in Sweden on day three. Other players in contention include Sean McLoughlin and Ronan McCrory, who are tied on 4-over, and James O'Rourke and Aodhagan Brady on 5-over.
Joo, an economics and international relations student, acknowledged that the greens were very grainy, and even short putts were challenging to make, but produced consecutive level-par 72s to take the title, while teammate Lucy Jamieson recorded the low score of the week with a 69, including two eagles and her first career hole-in-one on the 13th hole.
Leu, a sports science student from Halmstad University, won the men's event by mastering the 18th hole for a second consecutive day, and acknowledged that the victory was more satisfying than his previous win in Portugal due to the trickier course conditions, and is aiming to join the professional ranks with at least one more STS victory under his belt.
The Student Tour Series will continue with the fourth event at Troia Golf Club from February 28 to March 2, which will determine the field for the 2024/25 Final at St Andrews, and Ellie Monk of the University of St. Andrews is leading the women's portion of the 2024/25 R&A Student Tour Series (STS) Spain after posting a one-under-par 71 at La Sella Golf Club.
