Ahsan Iqbal Wins Oxford Debate

Updated :

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has secured a historic victory at the Oxford Union, winning a debate on the motion that liberal democracies have failed the global South. Iqbal's arguments highlighted the hypocrisy of Western democracies and their role in perpetuating economic exploitation and political suppression in the developing world.

During the debate, Iqbal emphasized the need to recognize the inalienable right to freedom and self-determination of Kashmiris and Palestinians, criticizing the current global institutions for controlling the Global South through economic dependency and geopolitical manipulation. He pointed out that the collapse of the USSR did not lead to a triumph of liberal democracy, but rather, the Global South remains trapped in poverty and economic servitude.

Iqbal also cited Jason Hickel's book, The Divide, which reveals that for every $1 in aid received by the Global South, it loses $14 through exploitative financial mechanisms. He criticized the injustice of intellectual property laws that enabled the West to monopolize COVID-19 vaccines, leading to preventable deaths in the Global South. Additionally, Iqbal highlighted the climate injustice perpetuated by liberal democracies, where the Global North contributes 80% of historical carbon emissions, while the Global South bears the highest price.

The minister's arguments resonated with the Oxford Union, securing 180 votes in favor of the motion, compared to 145 votes against. This significant victory marks a milestone for Pakistan and the Global South on an international platform, as Iqbal's debate win brings attention to the critical issues faced by the developing world.

The debate victory has been seen as a testament to Iqbal's diplomatic skills and his ability to articulate the concerns of the Global South. The win is expected to have a positive impact on Pakistan's international relations, as it highlights the country's commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of developing nations.
