Ashes Test: Ellyse Perry's Legacy Continues

Updated :

Annabel Sutherland made history by scoring a record-equalling third Test ton at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while Beth Mooney remained unbeaten on 98, as Australia took a 252-run lead over England on day two of the Ashes Test.

Sutherland's sparkling 163 runs helped Australia declare their innings at 440/9, with Mooney's unbeaten 98 putting the team in a commanding position. The duo added 274 runs for the fourth wicket, taking advantage of England's fielding errors to build a strong lead. Sutherland's performance drew a record crowd of 23,561 to the MCG, cementing her status as a household name in Australian cricket.

Sutherland credited Ellyse Perry's exemplary standards as a professional for shaping her into the player she is today. Her first Test was made possible by Perry's hip injury, which created an opportunity for her to bat at No. 3. Sutherland has taken the reins from Perry in all formats, scoring back-to-back Test centuries and becoming the first woman to post consecutive 150+ scores.

England's Ryana MacDonald-Gay praised Sutherland's batting, saying it's "very difficult" to bowl to her, as she's hard to figure out and sticks around for long periods. With two full days remaining in the game, England will need to regroup and improve their fielding to have any chance of catching up with Australia's lead.

As the Ashes Test heads into its final days, all eyes will be on Sutherland and Mooney to see if they can continue their impressive form and lead Australia to victory. The crowd will be eagerly waiting to see if Mooney can score her maiden Test century, and if Sutherland can continue to make history in the world of cricket.
