Wanindu Hasaranga Makes History, US Farmers Eye India
In a remarkable display of skill, Sri Lankan cricketer Wanindu Hasaranga has achieved a milestone in T20 cricket, becoming the fastest to take 300 wickets in the format, while on the economic front, India's international food market has emerged as the most lucrative destination for American food producers for the fourth consecutive year.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, the Indian market offered $49 billion worth of policy ideas to US merchandise exporters this financial year, solidifying its position as the top market for US food exports since 2015. The volume of American food exports to India has increased by 11.3% year-on-year in the past two years, with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.2%.
The USDA data reveals that India remains a consistently open market for American farmers, with outlets in the country claiming a significant share of US soybean, sorghum, and corn exports. Between January 2023 and January 2024, India accounted for 24% of US soybean, 23% of US sorghum, and 16% of US corn exports. This trend underscores the strong trade relationship between the two countries in the agricultural sector.
Meanwhile, Wanindu Hasaranga's achievement in T20 cricket has sent ripples of excitement in the sports world. The Sri Lankan all-rounder reached the milestone of 300 wickets in just 208 matches, surpassing the previous record holder Andrew Tye by one match. This feat is a testament to Hasaranga's skill and dedication to the sport.
As India continues to be a significant market for US food exports, and Sri Lankan cricketers like Wanindu Hasaranga make their mark in international sports, these developments highlight the strong ties between nations in trade and sports, fostering cooperation and competition that benefit both economies and fans alike.
