Pandya's Leadership Aspirations
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Hardik Pandya should play more first-class cricket to strengthen his leadership credentials, following his removal from the leadership group in favor of Suryakumar Yadav for T20I captaincy.
Manjrekar stated that Pandya's fitness and playing frequency would be crucial in determining his effectiveness, particularly in the 50-over format. He emphasized that playing consistently in first-class cricket would allow Pandya to showcase his ability to take on a higher workload, thus strengthening his case for leadership. Hardik Pandya's commitment to domestic cricket and changes in BCCI's selection committee will determine his long-term options for India's white-ball captaincy.
Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar feels Pandya has the ability to replicate Mahendra Singh Dhoni's role as a finisher in the Indian ODI set-up. Pandya has played 86 ODIs, scored 1769 runs at a strike rate of 110+, and taken 84 wickets. Bangar praises Pandya's composure, maturity, and adaptability, saying he is a good candidate to captain the Indian team.
As Pandya looks to reignite his leadership aspirations, his willingness to play consistently and perform well in domestic cricket will be key to his prospects. With his impressive record in ICC tournaments, including his vital contributions during the 2019 World Cup in England, Pandya will hope to get another chance to lead the team and prove his mettle as a captain.
