Release dates for Shrek 5 and Minions 3 have been adjusted, with Minions 3 now releasing on July 1, 2026, and Shrek 5 on December 23, 2026, to coincide with DreamWorks Animation's 25th anniversary, featuring returning characters and directors.

In a surprise move, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have shuffled the release dates of several highly anticipated animated movies, including Shrek 5 and Minions 3, with the latter now set to hit theaters earlier than expected, taking the original release date of Shrek 5.

The delayed Shrek 5, which marks the return of Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and Eddie Murphy as Donkey, was initially slated for release on July 1, 2026. However, it will now debut on December 23, 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of DreamWorks Animation. This new release date gives the production team more time to work on the film, which is the first new installment in the Shrek franchise in 16 years. Conrad Vernon, known for directing Shrek 2, is returning to the franchise to co-direct Shrek 5 alongside Walt Dohrn, who is also bringing back beloved characters to the screen.

Meanwhile, Minions 3 has been moved up to July 1, 2026, taking the place of the originally scheduled Shrek 5 release date. This change in schedule suggests a strategic decision by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation to capitalize on the popularity of the Minions franchise. With Brad Abelson, co-director of Minions: The Rise of Gru, and producers Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri on board, Minions 3 is expected to be a major box office hit. The adjustments in the release dates reflect the dynamic nature of the film industry, where timing can significantly impact a movie's success.

As fans of both franchises await the new releases, the changes underscore the ongoing evolution of the animation landscape. With Shrek 5 now aligned with a holiday season release and Minions 3 set to kick off the summer of 2026, audiences have much to look forward to from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation in the coming years.
