Kurram Conflict Eases as Bunker Demolition Begins
The Kurram district administration's efforts to dismantle bunkers and restore supplies mark significant steps towards peace, following a peace agreement that aims to de-weaponize the area and address shortages of essential items, offering a glimmer of hope for the conflict-stricken region.

In a significant step towards restoring peace in the troubled Kurram district of Pakistan, the local administration has initiated the process of dismantling bunkers that have fueled conflict in the region, aiming to remove all such structures by February 1 as part of a peace agreement signed on January 1.
The demolition process, which started on Monday, January 13, is being carried out under the supervision of committees formed by the administration, with police accompaniment to ensure security at the demolition sites. This move follows weeks of deadly tribal clashes that resulted in the loss of at least 130 lives and severe shortages of food and medicine due to road blockades, primarily stemming from land disputes. The situation had become dire, with residents of Parachinar complaining about the scarcity of essential items, including medicines.
In an effort to address the shortages, the K-P government deployed an MI-17 helicopter to deliver 2,900 kg of medicines worth Rs1.5 million to Sadda Hospital in Lower Kurram on Sunday. The administration has also launched a survey in areas such as Balish Khel and Khar Killay of Lower Kurram to identify and demolish bunkers used during the months-long violence. The peace agreement outlines fourteen key points, including the destruction of all bunkers by February 1 and the de-weaponization of the area, marking a significant step towards achieving peace and development in the district.
Despite the progress made with the peace agreement, the situation remains tense, with locals demanding support for victims of the Bagan violence. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has signaled its commitment to dedicating substantial resources to the restoration of the devastated area, offering hope for a new era of peace and development in Kurram. As the district moves forward, the successful implementation of the peace agreement and the resolution of underlying issues such as land disputes will be crucial in ensuring lasting stability.
