UK Introduces Electronic Travel Authorization for Visitors from Over 40 Countries

The United Kingdom has begun implementing an electronic travel authorization (ETA) system for visitors from over 40 countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, starting this week. This new requirement aims to streamline the travel process for individuals from countries that do not need a visa to enter the UK, while also enhancing border security and efficiency.

The ETA application process is designed to be straightforward, with travelers able to apply online or through an app. The application costs £10 (approximately $12.50) and is valid for two years, allowing for multiple entries of up to six months for tourism and business purposes. Applicants, including infants and children, must provide passport and photo information as part of the application process. It is essential for travelers to note that the ETA is required even for those with connecting flights through the UK, and a decision on the application is typically made within three days via email.

This move by the UK mirrors similar digital authorization requirements in countries like the United States and upcoming requirements in EU countries. The ETA is distinct from a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK; rather, it serves as a pre-authorization for travelers from visa-exempt countries. Upon arrival, travelers must still proceed through passport control. The scheme does not currently apply to EU citizens, who will be required to obtain an ETA starting April 2, 2025. Moreover, the UK's ETA does not cover entry into Europe, which will necessitate a separate EU travel waiver expected to be introduced in 2025.
