Rohit Sharma Left Stunned as Jasprit Bumrah Exits Amid Back Spasms

Updated :

India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed that regular fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been forced to leave the field with back spasms during the ongoing fifth Border-Gavaskar Test match at the SCG. Bumrah had bowled only one over after lunch on day two before experiencing discomfort.

This development comes amid concerns over Bumrah's workload in recent times. He has bowled a total of 152.1 overs in nine innings, taking 32 wickets at a remarkable average of 13.06. Rohit Sharma had previously mentioned the need to manage Bumrah's workload, but sometimes allowing him to take a break to avoid burnout. The medical team is currently monitoring his condition, and a scan has been conducted as a precautionary measure.

Recall Bumrah's heated exchange with Australia's Sam Konstas on the final over of Day 1 in the series-opener. Konstas' overzealous behavior sparked a fiery altercation, but ultimately backfired as Bumrah took the wicket of Khawaja on the final ball. Former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh criticized Konstas' intervention, stating that it fueled the intensity of the series. Interestingly, in this match, despite being listed at No. 10, Bumrah has been unable to take the field for India's batting lineup, bowled out for 6 runs by Scott Boland.

Meanwhile, new ball specialists Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are taking the new ball for India as Australia make a strong start in their chase of 162 runs. Rohit Sharma will have to navigate this challenging situation, finding an effective replacement for his star bowler, while also attempting to negotiate Australia's likely resurgent innings.

Bumrah's injury adds to the list of concerns for India, who are already struggling to keep pace with the Aussies in the series. Rohit Sharma and co. would be hoping for a quick recovery for their key bowler, as they continue to battle for a respectable finish in this ongoing series.
