Karachi Experiences First Winter Rain, Cold Wave to Last a Week
Karachi has witnessed its first winter rain, signaling the beginning of a cold wave that is expected to prevail in the city for the next week. Light drizzle in various areas significantly dropped temperatures, bringing a welcome respite from the scorching summer heat.
The rain, which was confined to key areas such as Gulshan-e-Maymar, Baldia Town, Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, and surrounding regions, was described as sporadic and light. According to the Meteorological Department, the cold snap is attributed to a high-pressure system in the north pushing cold air masses southward. As a result, the temperature is expected to continue to drop throughout the week, with light rain forecasted until Saturday morning.
The Met Department has issued a weather advisory, warning of light rain or drizzle in seven districts, including Kambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, and Sukkur. The cold wave is expected to bring chilly winds and cold weather to Karachi, with a minimum temperature predicted to drop between 8 and 6 degrees Celsius. The cold snap is expected to intensify across Sindh, with a setterly wave entering north Balochistan and western parts of the country, bringing dry and windy weather.
Night temperatures are expected to plummet to single digits in most parts of the province, including Karachi. The minimum temperature in Karachi on Friday was 11.4°C, while the maximum was 26.7°C, with humidity levels at 66% and 50% in the morning and evening, respectively.
As the cold wave gains strength, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and comfortable. With the temperature expected to drop to as low as 6°C, it's essential to dress warmly and stay indoors, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with medical conditions. The city's administration and authorities should also take measures to provide support to those in need during this time.
