Gazetted holidays, which are observed nationwide, mark key dates in India's history and celebrate important festivals, including Republic Day (January 26), Holi (March 14), Eid-ul-Fitr (March 31), Mahavir Jayanti (April 10), and many more. These holidays are observed by government offices, schools, colleges, and most private institutions, ensuring a nationwide break to promote communal harmony and cultural celebrations. Optional holidays, on the other hand, allow individuals to choose days that resonate with their personal, religious, or cultural needs, such as New Year (January 1), Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti (January 6), and Makar Sankranti (January 14).

While the central government has declared 51 holidays in total, the number of holidays varies across states, with Odisha topping the list with 56 holidays, followed closely by other states. Lakshadweep has the lowest number of holidays at 37. The regional festivals and bank holidays listed in the calendar cater to the unique cultural practices and celebrations specific to each state, adding a vibrant tapestry to the nationwide holiday calendar.
