Taiwan Conducts First Tabletop War Exercise to Counter China Tensions

Updated :

Taiwan's government has taken steps to prepare for potential military conflict with China, holding its first-ever tabletop war exercise. Led by Vice President Hsiao Bi-Khim and National Security Council chief Joseph Wu, the 3-hour simulation aimed to improve the island nation's deterrence against the threat of a Chinese invasion. With increasing tensions between the two sides, Taipei sought to test its responses to scenarios of escalating conflict.

The exercise, conducted at the Presidential Office in Taipei, involved central and local government units, as well as civil groups. The simulation tested participants' ability to respond to two hypothetical scenarios: high-intensity grey-zone warfare and a situation where Taiwan is on the brink of conflict with China. In order to ensure a realistic outcome, government agencies were not allowed to prepare in advance, with officials instead relying on ad-hoc decisions made during the simulation.

Taiwan's military and government agencies noted the need to enhance their ability to combat disinformation and ensure the flow of information during crises, a major area of concern in the face of a potential Chinese invasion. In recent years, Beijing has increased its online propaganda efforts, seeking to sway public opinion in Taiwan and undermine supporters of Taiwan's sovereignty.

The tabletop exercise is part of a broader effort by Taiwan to strengthen its national security and strengthen its ability to respond to the rapidly changing security environment. As tensions with China continue to escalate, Taiwan's government remains committed to defending its sovereignty and guarding against the threat of a Chinese invasion.
