Bangladesh Seeks Extradition of Ousted Prime Minister Hasina

Updated :

Bangladesh has reached out to India, requesting the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, citing judicial process. The move comes after Hasina fled to India in August, amidst allegations of corruption and crimes against humanity.

The extradition request, submitted as a note verbale, is based on allegations of embezzlement and corruption linked to the Rooppur nuclear power plant, resulting in a loss of around $5 billion. A writ filed in the high court by an opposition leader, Bobby Hajjaj, accused Hasina and her family of kickbacks, mismanagement, money laundering, and abuse of power. An investigation into these allegations has been launched by the Bangladesh anti-corruption commission.

Hasina's departure from Bangladesh in August followed accusations of "mass murder," charging her with numerous crimes, including crimes against humanity and genocide. Her family has denied the allegations. The extradition request comes two weeks after a visit to Dhaka by India's foreign secretary, who attempted to improve strained relations between the countries.

The diplomatic gesture, requesting the extradition, could signal a shift towards a more constructive relationship between the countries, and reflects Bangladesh's continued effort to resolve ongoing concerns through judicial channels. It remains to be seen if India will honor Bangladesh's request, or what legal obstacles may arise from this process. ]

As the extradition request progresses, international observers will be watching closely for the implications of this development on bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India, and the impact on the stability of the region.
