Oman Unveils Ambitious Initiatives to Bolster Food Security

Updated :

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Oman has launched a series of impactful projects aimed at enhancing the country's food security. Through collaborative efforts with government entities and private sector partners, these initiatives promise to significantly contribute to the nation's self-sufficiency in food production and distribution.

One of the flagship projects is a state-of-the-art sugar refining facility at Sohar Port. Already 91% complete, this facility will boast an impressive annual production capacity of one million tonnes of sugar. Leveraging cutting-edge European technology and machinery, the project will cater to both local and international markets, injecting a substantial boost to Oman's burgeoning sugar industry. Moreover, the facility's strategic location at Sohar Port ensures seamless export capabilities, further expanding Oman's reach in the global market.

In addition to the sugar refining project, the Ministry has also announced the construction of 160,000-tonne wheat silos at Sohar Port. This infrastructure development will serve to strengthen the country's grain storage and logistics capabilities, enhancing its preparedness to respond to emerging challenges in the global food market. Furthermore, the expansion of the fodder factory of Oman Mills Company in Muttrah is set to increase the production capacity to 20 tonnes, ensuring a more reliable supply of high-quality feedstock for the nation's livestock and agriculture.

The concerted efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and its partners in the private sector will undoubtedly have a profound impact on Oman's food security landscape. As these ambitious projects near completion, the nation takes a significant step forward in ensuring the stability and resilience of its agricultural sector.
