Australia Selects Sam Konstas for Final Two Tests Against India

Updated :

In a bid to strengthen their batting lineup, Australia has recalled 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas for the final two Tests against India, replacing Nathan McSweeney who has struggled against Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

The move is seen as a gamble, but selectors are optimistic about Konstas's potential, citing his impressive form in the Sheffield Shield, where he has scored two centuries, including a 152-run innings against South Australia. As a result, Konstas stands a chance to become Australia's youngest Test batter since Ian Craig in 1953. Konstas has been曁excited to make the cut, calling his inclusion a "huge honour" and stating it will be a special experience to represent the country.

Konstas is expected to face an immediate baptism by fire as the Boxing Day Test against India gets underway on December 25. He will be tasked with countering the threat of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been testing Australian batsmen throughout the series. However, Konstas has downplayed the challenge, stating he won't overprepare and will rely on his skills when facing Bumrah. His recent performances for Australia A and in the Sheffield Shield have shown he is ready for the big stage, and he aims to treat the MCG fixture as "just another game" despite the high stakes.

The inclusion of Konstas has also paved the way for the return of Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott to the Australian squad. Josh Hazlewood's injury has opened up a spot in the pace attack, and both Richardson and Abbott have been recalled to bolster the Australian bowling lineup. Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne, who have been in solid form throughout the series, have also retained their spots in the squad.

Meanwhile, Nathan McSweeney's Test career has stalled, and he has been dropped for the final two matches in Australia. McSweeney had struggled to make an impact against Indian bowlers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah, which led to selectors making a change to their lineup. McSweeney has vowed to work hard to regain his spot, which may not be straightforward, given the competition from Cameron Green's return from injury.

The series is tied 1-1 ahead of the Boxing Day Test, and with Konstas set to make his Test debut, the stage is set for an exciting clash between Australia and India. Australia is looking to bounce back and claim victory, while India will be looking to continue their upward momentum.
