Pakistan scripting history with dominant 2-0 series lead over South Africa

Updated :

Pakistan has taken an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against South Africa, with a convincing 81-run win in the second One-Day International (ODI) at Newlands. This victory marks the country's first three ODI bilaterals in South Africa in the 21st century, cementing their position as a force to be reckoned with in the continent.

Pakistan's outstanding display saw them post a healthy total of 329 all out, which was setup by the impressive partnership of Babar Azam (73) and captain Mohammad Rizwan (80) for the third wicket. Their 115-run stand off 142 balls proved to be the backbone of Pakistan's innings and laid the foundation for their victory.

In response, South Africa struggled to make an impression, being bowled out for 248 despite Heinrich Klaasen's spirited 97. Fast bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah led the destruction, claiming four wickets each to secure the win for Pakistan. The comprehensive nature of the win saw Pakistan edge even closer to securing the series.

Pakistan captain Muhammad Rizwan was fulsome in his praise for the team's display, stating, "It's a team game, from beginning to end all of the guys are involved and contributing." He also highlighted the contributions of individual players such as Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, and Kamran Ghulam, who all chipped in with runs. The fast bowlers, Afridi and Shah, have consistently performed well throughout the series, showcasing their expertise with the ball.

The Proteas, on the other hand, succumbed to pressure, as captain Temba Bavuma expressed disappointment at the loss, admitting that the team let the game slip away after the first 25 overs. Following the match, he also revealed that they would be reviewing their strategy to prevent similar losses in the remaining games. South Africa will need a major turnaround if they are to stay alive in the series and end their losing streak against Pakistan.

The final match of the series will take place on Sunday, with Pakistan already having secured the upper hand. As they look to complete the clean sweep, Pakistan will be eager to demonstrate their strength and solidify their position as the superior team in the series. With their fifth successive series win and their third in the southern hemisphere season, Pakistan is undoubtedly dominating in the world of ODI cricket.
