OpenAI Launches Phone and WhatsApp Access for ChatGPT
OpenAI, the developer of the popular chatbot ChatGPT, has expanded its platform to allow users to access the chatbot through phone calls and WhatsApp messages. The new service, which is free for US-based users and available globally via WhatsApp, provides a low-cost and accessible way for newcomers to experience ChatGPT's capabilities.
The phone service, accessible through the toll-free number 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478 for outside the US), enables users to engage with ChatGPT through voice calls. Each phone number is limited to 15 minutes of call time per month, providing an entry-level experience for those new to the chatbot. OpenAI's chief product officer, Kevin Weil, described this service as a "stepping stone" for AI newcomers, offering a user-friendly experience that allows users to explore ChatGPT's capabilities without committing to the web-based platform.
For international users, ChatGPT is also integrated with WhatsApp, enabling them to interact with the chatbot through text messages. This feature is powered by GPT-4o mini, an integration with the WhatsApp API. OpenAI emphasizes that the phone and WhatsApp services are positioned as entry-level options, allowing existing users to continue utilizing the traditional web-based version for more advanced functionality and personalization options.
With the launch of 1-800-CHATGPT and WhatsApp integration, OpenAI has provided a new avenue for users to access ChatGPT, further solidifying its aggressive growth plan to compete with rival AI companies. This move follows a string of announcements from the company, including the introduction of its AI video-generation tool, and signals OpenAI's commitment to making ChatGPT more accessible to a wider audience.
