WhatsApp Update Fixes Serious Security Flaw in Desktop App

A critical vulnerability in WhatsApp's desktop app for Windows has been patched, which could have allowed attackers to trick users into executing malicious code via spoofed file types, making harmful files appear safe.

The bug involved MIME type manipulation, and users are urged to update to version 2.2450.6 to stay protected. This vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-7941, affects WhatsApp for Windows Desktop prior to 2.2450.6 and allows adversaries to deploy malware via an attachment such as an image. Experts warn that the flaw is "nasty" and could be used for data theft, running malware, or spreading it, account and identity theft, or other malicious activities.
