GTA V Modder Faces Copyright Strike Over GTA 6 Map

A GTA 5 modder, known as Dark Space, has had a YouTube video showcasing a GTA 6 map mod removed due to a copyright strike from Take-Two Interactive, despite the mod being based on leaked material from two years ago.

The mod, which adds the GTA 6 map into GTA 5, was created using a game engine and is considered the most accurate representation of the official Rockstar Games map. It is available to download for free and is ideal for GTA role-playing servers, allowing users to alter, update, and improve it. However, its availability may be threatened by Rockstar Games or its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, which has been known for its aggressive copyright enforcement against modders.

The removal of the YouTube video and the subsequent removal of download links by Dark Space were done to prevent further legal action. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between game developers and modders, with Take-Two Interactive taking a strong stance against the use of leaked material. GTA 6 was officially revealed in 2022 and is still scheduled for release in 2025, with a release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S scheduled for later this year.

The incident raises questions about the balance between copyright protection and fan creativity, with some arguing that mods like Dark Space's can help build a community and generate buzz around a game, while others see it as a violation of intellectual property rights. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how developers and modders navigate these complex issues.
