AR Rahman and Saira Banu Announce Separation After 29 Years

Updated :

Indian composer and music director AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have ended their 29-year marriage, with both parties issuing separate announcements. The couple had been the subject of speculation over the years, with some rumors suggesting that Rahman's conversion to Islam was motivated by his marriage to Saira Banu.

However, in a 2000 interview, Rahman had stated that his decision to convert to Islam was a personal choice, deriving from spiritual experiences he had encountered, including encounters with a Sufi healer who played a significant role in his father's cancer treatment. This spiritual journey led him to embrace Islam, finding peace and guidance in the faith. In this context, it is now known that Rahman's wife Saira, converted 2 years after their marriage.

Additionally, the couple had openly discussed their efforts to instill diversity in their children, introducing them to Hindu and Islamic studies in their educational regimen. The family's commitment to mutual understanding and respect transcended traditional boundaries, reflecting the complexities of modern life. Despite their apparent differences, their marital separation, however, marks a turning point in their lives. In a statement, Rahman himself mentioned regret over not having been able to prioritize his relationship with his wife more. In his social media post, he also expressed hope that their relationship might have lasted another year.

This news arrives in the midst of public reminiscences and nostalgic reflections on their relationship, including recollections from their early days, such as Rahman practicing veena in another room during their honeymoon while his wife slept beside him. Now, their separation serves as a poignant reminder that even with commitment and understanding, nothing is everlasting and situations can change rapidly.
