Paris Braces for High-Tension Match Amid Protests and Security Concerns

Updated :

Paris is on high alert ahead of the Uefa Nations League match between France and Israel, with 4,000 extra police officers and 1,600 private security guards deployed to ensure public safety. The lavish pro-Israel gala held on the eve of the match had already sparked clashes between pro-Palestine demonstrators and law enforcement, resulting in several arrests and injuries.

The deployment of security forces is a response to the recent antisemitic violence in Amsterdam, where several individuals were injured and dozens arrested following the Maccabi Tel Aviv defeat. The event has led to France taking steps to prevent a similar scenario, with the police chief announcing 2,500 officers would provide a distinct presence around the stadium, backed by the elite RAID unit. The French government aims to establish an "anti-terrorist security perimeter," which includes two separate ID checks and exhaustive searches for attendees.

Tensions are already evident ahead of the match, as supporters will undergo identity checks and areas close to the stadium are being closed to the public, including bars and restaurants, from the afternoon. France Unbowed, a far-left party, has called for the match to be cancelled, criticizing Israel's actions, though Israel repudiates these claims as unfounded accusations.

President Emmanuel Macron's attendance at the match serves as a show of support for European Jews and solidarity following the recent incidents. Despite the existing tensions, the international soccer match is expected to go ahead, demonstrating France's resolve to ensure public safety and security despite the challenges posed by these complex issues.
