ICC Delays Champions Trophy Schedule Amid India's Refusal to Participate in Pakistan

Updated :

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has pushed back the announcement of the 2025 Champions Trophy schedule, citing India's reluctance to participate in the tournament due to concerns over touring Pakistan. The ICC had originally planned to hold the event from February 19 to March 19, 2025, but the delay has left the schedule up in the air with less than 100 days to go.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stated that his board is not considering a "hybrid model" for the tournament, which was used in the 2022 Asia Cup. The hybrid model allowed India to play some matches in Sri Lanka and four matches in Pakistan. Naqvi emphasized that any decisions or communications regarding the schedule must come directly from the ICC or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He dismissed speculation in the media, stating that the PCB values written communication and will only accept India's decision if it receives a written letter. India's refusal to participate in Pakistan stems from advice from the Indian government, which has led to a potential shift towards a hybrid model, where teams may travel between Pakistan and an alternative venue.

The UAE and Sri Lanka are reportedly being considered as potential alternatives, with the UAE emerging as the frontrunner due to its proximity to Pakistan. This situation marks the latest development in a long-standing issue, with India absent from Pakistani soil since the 2008 Asia Cup, except for a short visit during Pakistan's 2012-13 white-ball tour. Additionally, Pakistan had initially approached India for Champions Trophy participation in 2020, but the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICC and PCB are likely to implement a contingency plan to accommodate the absence of India, but no official decision has been made yet.

The delay in the Champions Trophy schedule highlights the ongoing complexities surrounding cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan. The ICC's decision to delay the announcement is a reflection of the challenges in resolving these tensions, and a resolution may not be reached in time for the scheduled tournament. As the situation remains uncertain, cricket fans will be eagerly awaiting news on the fate of the event.
