Himachal Pradesh Braces for Winter Weather, Authorities Scramble to Clear Snow-Stricken Roads

Updated :

Himachal Pradesh is preparing for its first significant snowfall of the season, with light to moderate snowfall forecasted from December 27 to 29, followed by a drop in temperatures and light rain in the plains and low-lying areas. Despite the challenges, authorities have been working tirelessly to clear snow-stricken roads, with the police playing a crucial role in ensuring safe passage for stranded vehicles.

A recent incident saw Himachal police utilizing an innovative technique to rescue a stuck vehicle from a massive traffic jam on a hill highway, caused by extreme snowfall. The authorities employed a foil to place in front of the vehicle to aid it in gaining traction and navigating through the snowy lanes safely. This ingenuity is essential in addressing the age-old issue of front-wheel drive cars losing traction on snow-covered roads in hilly areas. The police's resourcefulness is a testament to the state's preparedness in tackling winter weather-related challenges.

As the winter season sets in, several districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba, and Sirmaur, are grappling with the aftermath of heavy snowfall. At least four fatalities have been reported, and numerous individuals have been injured in the process. A total of 223 roads, including three national highways, have been shut down until further notice. The severity of the situation has resulted in hotel occupancy in Shimla reaching 70%, with a notable increase in room bookings. Resorting to power cuts, 356 transformers have ceased to function, and the authorities have deployed 268 machineries, including snow blowers, to expedite the clearance of snow-covered roads.

Considering the high volume of visitors heading to popular tourist spots in the region, authorities are urging tourists to adhere to safety guidelines and avoid driving through snowy conditions. The local government is urging caution, taking proactive measures to prepare for the worst-case scenario. An avalanche warning has been issued in several districts, prompting the residents and tourists alike to exercise maximum vigilance. It is imperative for authorities to ensure a coordinated response to the unfolding situation to prevent further disruptions and casualties.

As the weather forecast predicts a significant drop in temperatures and light rain in the coming days, the authorities must remain vigilant in their efforts to address the snow-stricken roads and ensure public safety. With the ongoing effort to restore order and mitigate the impact of the harsh weather, the people of Himachal Pradesh must come together to support each other and minimize the disruption caused by the winter weather.
