Honda Paves the Way for the Future with Next-generation e:HEV Technologies

Updated :

At a recent press briefing, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced its strategy for the future of hybrid-electric vehicles, marking a significant step towards achieving its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The company revealed its next-generation e:HEV system, which boasts advanced technologies to enhance the driving experience and reduce environmental impact.

Honda's ongoing commitment to hybrid-electric technology is evident in its plans to continue developing new HEV models to meet the increasing demand in the market. The next-generation e:HEV system is designed to further refine the existing strengths of the current system, offering "the joy of mobility that resonates with all of the driver's senses" through improved environmental performance and driving experience. The renewed system will feature new component parts, including engines, drive units, and control technology, which will contribute to a more attractive hybrid-electric vehicle lineup.

Notably, Honda will adopt electric all-wheel drive (E-AWD) units and introduce the Next-generation Mid-size Platform for its hybrid-electric vehicles. This cutting-edge technology will improve driving stability and response, while the new platform will provide a sporty and exhilarating driving experience while reducing vehicle weight by 10%. Additionally, Honda aims to reduce the cost of each hybrid-electric model up to 50% by 2027, which will contribute to improved profitability.

The company is also emblematic of its commitment to electrification technologies, as evidenced by its plans to introduce seven 0 Series models globally by 2030. This includes expanding its line-up with the Prologue, its first all-electric SUV, and the first EVs based on the new Honda-developed EV platform, which have begun production at the Honda plant in Ohio. Furthermore, the renewed emphasis on hybrid-electric technology reflects Honda's aim to make battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles account for 100% of new vehicle sales by 2040.

By pursuing innovations in its e:HEV technologies, Honda sets itself on a strong path to achieving its goal of a more sustainable future. The return of the iconic Prelude nameplate, as a hybrid-electric sports coupe, marks a milestone in this pursuit. This significant announcement complements Honda's current offerings, including the Civic and Accord hybrids, and underscores its dedication to providing electrified products that meet shifting customer demands and preferences.
