Pakistan Declares Public Holiday to Celebrate Iqbal Day
Pakistan is set to observe Iqbal Day on November 9, a national public holiday that marks the 147th birth anniversary of national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The day, which was temporarily suspended in 2015, was reinstated in 2022, and this year, the State Bank of Pakistan has also announced that all banks will remain closed on the occasion.
Iqbal Day has been a significant event in Pakistan for decades, traditionally observed by educational institutions where students recite Iqbal's poetry and discuss his contributions to the country's heritage. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also listed Iqbal Day as a holiday for its missions in line with the federal government's directive. This year, a ceremony at the mausoleum of Dr. Iqbal in Lahore will mark the occasion, featuring a change of guards ceremony, and events will be held throughout the country to highlight Iqbal's life, work, and philosophy.
For Pakistan, Iqbal Day holds great significance, as it not only honors the poet and philosopher but also serves as a reminder of the pivotal role he played in inspiring the creation of Pakistan. Dr. Iqbal's Allahabad address in 1930 is widely recognized as a landmark moment in pre-partition politics, giving direction and a separate identity to Muslims in the sub-continent. The anniversary of Iqbal Day serves as a symbol of national pride and a celebration of the country's rich cultural heritage.
As Pakistan observes Iqbal Day, citizens across the country are expected to come together to participate in celebrations, pay tribute to Dr. Iqbal's memory, and reflect on the inspiration and guidance he continues to provide to the nation.
